Go deeper down the rabbit's hole to define this 21st Century Competency. Unveil misconceptions of critical thinking and examine how projects can promote critical thinking. Participants will actually go through the project process to create an original solution, while the facilitator models how the teaching and assessing of critical thinking can be infused along the way. 

Trauma & The Road to Recovery

1 Day Workshop

How do we best support and encourage our learners who have experienced trauma?

This session launches with startling statistics about the prevalence of trauma in our communities by reviewing key data from the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Study, which revealed that traumatic life experiences during childhood and adolescence are far more common than expected.

Understanding the sheer scope of trauma is not enough – thus, we will dive deeper into the implications of how trauma affects the brain, the body and how the effects of trauma manifest in educational settings.

Wrapping our heads around the realities of trauma can be disheartening and defeating, but hope is not lost. Together, we will imagine a road to recovery by examining various evidence-based practices for our learners with trauma. These include evidence-based therapies for rehabilitating traumatized brains and bodies. 

In a collaborative setting, we will use a creative process to imagine and design three types of solutions: 

  1. Healing experiences for our learners with trauma

  2. Learning experiences for our educators to better understand, empathize and engage with our learners with trauma

  3. Opportunities for community building



1 Day Workshop

Dive into collaborative and experiential learning to better understand the neuroscience of “the brain on bias.”


Hint: We ALL have implicit bias - our brains are wired for it. Reveal what can be done to overcome the brain’s wiring in favor of implicit bias and implicit associations.

Participants will review and discuss resources, perspectives, personal experiences, Harvard implicit association assessments as well as research on implicit bias, including what it is, how to self-identify implicit bias, how to overcome it, how to talk about it, how to teach others about it and how to cope with it personally and professionally.

Participants will demonstrate their understanding of the neuroscience of implicit bias with a model of “the brain on bias” while creatively embedding strategies for how to overcome these biases on our shared quest for equity.

1 Day Workshop

Explore Creativity and Innovation at all levels.


Learn about the Makers Movement, Maker Spaces, traits of creators and innovators as well as how to encourage, teach, assess and create the conditions to enable creativity and innovation to take root. 


Go deeper with creativity and innovation by conducting a baseline assessment of where you fall in terms of promoting creativity and innovation. Then, explore and practice specific instructional strategies for building creative and innovator skill sets with your students.

You’ll complete and share a key design challenge to help you progress along the creative spectrum. The workshop is filled with modeling so that you can experience how creativity and innovation can be quickly taught, practice and enhanced in learning environments. You’ll also walk out the door equipped with new tools and resources as well as with a new creative design challenge to be used with your students beyond the workshop.

The workshop models a student-centered learning environment, in which you will learn about yourself as a learner, set your own personal goals and experience what it feels like to progress in a highly learner-centric environment. You will walk out the door with plans to advance yourself along the student-centered learning spectrum of practice.

Balanced Assessment

for Deeper Learning

This deep dive on assessment explores best practices that can be used to measure and enhance learning

Participants will be equipped with the knowledge, tools and resources to engage in balanced and effective assessment  planning and practices. Throughout the day, application time to develop materials and tools will be embedded in mini-workshops on key assessment topics, including:

  • Creating & using rubrics as well as other methods of assessment

  • Coaching the tuning and development of student work
    over time

  • Collecting, archiving and reporting learning

Participants will work on designing a balanced assessment plan for a unit or a project. Participants will balance performance-based assessments with traditional assessments through a careful analysis of their learning outcomes. Walk out the door with an array of assessment tools for your unit or project.
